BIRDS

In re: The builder birds. This isn't far fetched at all about the female bird doing the carpentry work while the male bird simply supplies the materials. While building our house, Kathy would catch mistakes that the architectural draftsman missed, I missed, the prime contractor / construction advisor missed, the construction workers missed. My theory of house building consisted of laying down a floor, putting up some walls, putting a roof over everything, be sure to include some rooms in the house, (including at least a bathroom or two), paint everything blue and there you have it. Kathy's version wasn't quite that simple. I handled the outside design and Kathy knows how a house is supposed to function. I designed a beautifully curved yard, driveway, etc. and Kathy designed a house that works like a house. Leave the nest building to the nest builders. Leave the flights of fancy to the poets and dreamers. Trust me on this one. Bill 4-30-03

I was standing in the kitchen, looking out the window, watching the birds eating at the Gazebo feeder. Four lady sparrows were eating inside. On the ground was one male. He was picking around on the ground and finally came up with a piece of dried grass about 3 or 4 inching long. He centered it in his beak and fluttered up to the Gazebo. He fluttered around the edge for a couple seconds, then dropped back to the ground. He then made another attempt. This time he made it to the ledge and landed. He poked his head inside the feeder and dropped the grass in front of one of the females. She immediately snatched up the grass and flew out, with him right behind. They flew off together to a nearby tree. What an arrangement! He brings in the lumber and she does the building. 4-29-03
