9-8-2004--Our electric was off during the storm and I could not use my computer or watch the U.S. Open during that time. Our home has been a shelter to several family members during the last two storms. Ivan is now on its way, possibly here, by this weekend. Maybe we'll fly out to Washington for shelter. I think our plans for this weekend are going to be smashed. I called Bill a few days ago. He and Cathy survived. Love & Peace, Philip

A Conversation With Ingrid January 11, 2004
Paul (Philip) has laryngitis, so I'm calling to give you an update. He's doing good. We've about got back on the right track again. He's starting to act like his old self again, getting things done. He's back climbing ladders, but he paces himself, and he's practicing stress control. He goes to cardiac rehab twice a week, and he's getting better. What saved his life was he knew the family history and knew something wasn't right, so they did a stress test in 1988, and they wanted to put him in the hospital right then. He went in a week later. The year 2000 he was having problems, and he said, "Take me to the hospital." So he listens to his body. He talked to Barb and to Jerry (Burdett). He'll be working on the family roster.

A CONVERSATION WITH PHILIP DU BOSE 12/02/2003

At Cecelia's funeral we had a few from the bigger family. There were Bill Johns, Reatha and Lloyd, Ingrid and I. Afterward Ingrid and I went over to their house to visit. . A lot of the Higgins (Viola Burdett Higgins' family) say they will put the reunion on the agenda from now on, and they will invite us to their family reunion which they have when Gail and Gil come down from Alaska. (Nellie/Wm>Viola>Charlene>Gail). That reunion is whenever Gail and Gil can get away. It was four or five years ago when Gail came down. The people from Alaska, where they live, sent meat from caribou packed in bags, and they cooked it down here outside the church.

Ruthie's daughters, Donna and Jackie, said we can call them for information about the family. They aren't telling Reatha about Ceil's dying.

This year at the Burdett Reunion there were more Higgins than usual. All of the families but Bud and Reatha were represented. (the 12 branches of Nellie & William Burdett). Over a hundred attended. Aunt Dorothy had one item auctioned and one raffled. She was in a wheelchair, and I told her, "Hey! You ran over my foot!" She just laughed and laughed.

I'm much better than I was. The past several weeks I've been back to normal with my equilibrium, and I've been up on the ladder working inside. I'm not getting fatigued.

Conversation With Philip & Ingrid 9-13-2003

Ingrid - He was out of the hospital on Tuesday. He was there two weeks. We're trying to get him built up. He's getting antibiotics every day. Monday we'll find out how many more weeks he has of that.

Philip - I'm heading back north, meaning back uphill. In the hospital I kept having setbacks. The last test came back negative, so they sent me home. I'm getting daily injections for a while longer, but I expect to have a full recovery.

A CONVERSATION WITH PHILIP DUBOSE 9-7-2003
I've had some health problems, and I'm in the hospital. I expect to be released this evening or tomorrow. I should be back on my feet in three or four weeks. I had an abscess on my liver and then a slight stroke. I am taking antibiotics and blood thinners. The blood thinners I expect to continue for about six months. They are still doing tests.

Bill and I both had problems because of building a house. They can't keep us down though. My hero is Aunt Dorothy. She's bound and determined to be at the reunion. We need to get busy on planning the reunion. I think we can do what needs to be done, but I will call and ask individuals if they can help.

We started planning last July and signed a contract for a new home in October. By December 1 the builder was underway with the first push of the bulldozer to break ground. Then time drug along, painfully, through May, June and July. Finally by next Thursday, July 28, 2003, we will be moving in - moving van and all. Sounds like eight long months to me.

Camelliawood, here in Seffner, Florida has been sold, and if everything goes right, we will be closing the sale on July 31. Click HERE to request our new address in Valrico. Same phone number as now.

We hope to see everyone at the Burdett Family Reunion at Lowery Park, Tampa, Florida in November (second Sunday). Time flies fast. It won't be long until fall.

Sorry I haven't been on line, but I have been busting butt from seven to seven for months now. Hopefully, I'm going to survive.7-20-2003

This is for all of my friends that like genealogy as much as I do. (And even
if you don't, it explains some of the twigs on my personality.) 10/16/02

THE FAMILY TREE

They think that I should cook and clean, and be a model wife.
I tell them it's more interesting to study Grandpa's life.
They simply do not understand why I hate to go to bed . . .
I'd rather do two hundred years of research work instead.
Why waste the time we have on earth just snoring and asleep?
When we can learn of ancestors that sailed upon the deep?
We have Priests, Rabbis, lawmen, soldiers, more than just a few.
And yes, there's many scoundrels, and a bootlegger or two.
How can a person find this life an awful drudge or bore?
When we can live the lives of all those folks who came before?
A hundred years from now of course, no one will ever know
Whether I did laundry, but they'll see our Tree and glow . . .
'Cause their dear old granny left for them, for all posterity,
not clean hankies and the like, but a finished family tree.
My home may be untidy, 'cause I've better things to do . . .
I'm checking all the records to provide us with a clue.
Old great granny's pulling roots and branches out with glee,
Her clothes ain't hanging out to dry, she's hung up on the Tree.

Boy, it must be starting. I can't believe what happened to me Saturday. Ingrid mentioned something about Tuesday being our anniversary. What! It hadn't even crossed my mine. Not even once. And, I don't think it would have if she hadn't mentioned it. She told me not to worry about it. I was getting her a new house. That would be enough this year. She said she didn't know what to get me anyway. I don't need any new clothes or any other etceteras.

Do you think I should get her a card, send her some flowers, take her to a movie. Or is she right about the house. Write to BRYBURCON and let me know what you think. Philip DuBose, 8/10/2002 PS 47 years.

My computer is now working fine with no glitches. It's just me who is not pushing the little white squares with black letters on the keyboard who is procrastinating. Actually, I have been giving all my attention to my current priority of building a new home. I will try to cover my activities with BRYBURCON as I proceed. The first item I am sharing with you is a news release sent to the TBACS Camellia Bulletin for their September issue. Note that outside of my family, I am known as Paul. -- Philip DuBose, 8/9/2002

CAMELLIA SOCIETY TREASURER RESIGNS

Paul DuBose has announced his resignation as treasurer of the Tampa Bay Area Camellia Society for personal reasons. He has served this society in that capacity for the past six years, and regrets that he is unable to continue for the coming camellia season.
Ingrid and Paul are in the process of building a new home in Valrico, Florida and will be placing their home, Camelliawood, on the market in the near future. They state that this activity will demand their full attention.
Paul sent his letter of resignation, effective September 1, to the TBACS board of directors in June so that a replacement treasurer could be provided. In April he was reelected to a seventh term as treasurer before this new project became a priority.
Paul says, "The purpose of selling Camelliawood and relocating is to greatly reduce the amount of residential maintenance during our next 20 years. We call it our 70 to 90 plan. Although our new home will be on a postage stamp size lot without a swimming pool, we hope to find a place for at least one or two camellias."
Camelliawood II is a beautifully landscaped gardens located in Seffner on one full acre. Eight-eight camellias are planted under the shade of large oaks and 30 ligustrum trees. Many on these camellias were transplanted from Camelliawood I four years ago. Several are from Mr. DW Davis's camellia collection, including the Elizabeth Boardman plant that originally produced a seedling that became the world renowned, Mrs. DW Davis camellia and first flowered in 1951.
Paul and Ingrid say that their greatest regret in their decision to downsize is in having to leave behind their beloved camellias.

The new BryBurCon looks crisp and fresh. Verry professional.

Here's an item: Snowbirds Exit Florida

The Tampa Tribune, dateline April 13, 2002 contained an article concerning
Florida 'snowbirds' and their annual exodus in the spring of each year
around Easter.

I realize that our family could have fit into such a classification except
that grandma and grandpa Burdett were so poor and had so many children, that
they could only afford a one way ticket from Ohio. Submitted by Philip

Goodness is the only investment that never fails. -Henry David Thoreau

The days that make us happy make us wise. -John Masefield

This is a yard stick. I know it is because I found it in my yard. You can use it to measure the gas in your tractor or the gas in your neighbor's tractor. You can use it to make a mark in the sand or to start a fire. You can shake it at anyone you wish or throw it to your dog. You can use it to scratch your back or the bottom of your foot. You can put it anywhere you want, but please, don't put it back in my yard. -modified from mountain lore.

It is wonderful how much may be done if we are always doing.- Thomas Jefferson

Woman ask, "Why do you like kissing so much?" Man answers, "Sure beats fighting."

The excitement of eating roasted peanuts, is finding the LAST unshelled nut in a bowl of hulls. But, when do you know when you've found it?

Character is what you are in the dark. -Dwight Moody

The only reason we appear to others as we appear to ourselves in a mirror is because our faces and bodies are symmetrical. But the way we see ourselves is not, necessarily, the way we really are. For example; the mole we might see on one side of our face is seen by others to be on the other side. Meaning: The way we see ourselves might not be the way we are perceived by others.

Good character is more to be praised than outstanding talent. Most talents are, to some extent, a gift. Good character, by contrast, is not given to us. We have to build it, piece by piece- by thought, choice, courage and determination. -H. Jackson Browne

Herein lies a dilemma. What do you give a lady who has everything but a pilemma? Some clothes, some shoes, a hat for her head? A clock, a rock, a pillow for the bed? But there is something with universal appeal. It's six inches long, one size fits all. A gift certificate that never expires. You can use it at home or in any mall.

You are continuing to add new spice to the website; that's nice. There's a lot of humor and philosophy to be found in our family genes. I hope that most of the contributions that are submitted to DOODLES are original material. Reluctantly, I added some collected quotes to my original JOTS for flavor, but at the risk of dilution. Hickory, dickory, dock. What the hell happened to the clock? I had one, there was no fun. Hickory, dickory dock.

(here's another fun one) Hickory, dickory, dock. Ten mice ran up the clock. The clock struck one and now there's nine. Hickory, dickory dock.

His father ask of the lad who read incessantly of Star Wars, "Why not read classics of old; 'Robin Hood,' 'Treasure Island' or 'Mutiny on the Bounty?' " Answered he, "Why should I read of the past when my mind to the future be?" The father answered the question in a simple explanation, "We study the past >so to the future we can go."

Human felicity is produced not so much by great pieces of good fortune that seldom happen, as by little advantages that occur every day. -Benjamin Franklin

If time is said to be the forth dimension, I propose that individualism is the fifth. Individualism is like a book with pages stacked one thousand high, yes one million or more. I'm on one page, you are on the next. Our lives meet, they cross, but they're not the same. The neighbor down the street is on another dimension. At exactly the same moment in time, millions of events are taking place, yes unknown billions; the fifth dimension.

All of us have times when a thought or idea will pop into our heads, especially the cute little one-liners. If you are like me, it will pop back out in an hour or so. For the past several years I have been making a practice of jotting them down, capturing them, so to speak, as soon as the thought occurs to me. The memos, or jots as I call them, on this page are of my own origin unless otherwise credited to others. Most were originally written as poems, but on this page are written out as text.

Toys are for boys both big and small to have fun and games, good times to all. But my gift to you is to help you get through the years. When you will be laughing, others will be in tears.

You don't need a diamond. You don't need a ring. So what do you give a wife 'who has everything?' Last year you got a brick to help you up the road. But this is our last year here; new seeds will soon be sowed. A new house is what you want. A new house is what you'll get; with a kitchen in the middle and a pool to get you wet. Herein lies a Christmas surprise. Your toes have tile and carpet to meet. But you say 'tis still not big enough? So, I'm adding a few more feet. If there were a commandment, "Thou shall not abuse thy body," we would all be sinners.

Long ago I heard it said, "Give a man a fish and you can feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish, and you can feed him for a lifetime." But I have observed, that for one who is unteachable, you will have to support him forever.

ON MARRIAGE

Some homes operate like the government.

The husband appropriates the funds and makes the rules,

And the wife spends the money and exercises the veto.

Ladder of success...

Manager: "To what do you contribute your success in becoming vice president

of this company?"

Executive: "Well, I worked my way up from the bottom. I went to cocktail

parties, played golf and tennis, and married the chairman of the board's

daughter.

Job description: The man said he was an 'executive assistant.' When asked

about already being retired, he answered, "Yes, but now I work full time for

my spouse."

You receive your first degree when graduating from high school and your

receive the third degree.

AND MONEY

What inflation? Today, people throw the word "million" around like the word,

"thousand" several years ago.

The biggest deals are made on the golf course and executed in the office.

If everyone was rich and spent little money, the economy would be a bust.

If everyone spent everything they made, the economy would thrive,

but they would all be poor.

So, you're damned if you do and damned if you don't.

To live a dream, you must plan it.

To plan a dream, you must live it
